James J. Lang is generally considered to be the first professional player.

He played for Wednesday in the 1860's /1870's but was not paid by the them but was employed by one of the companies owned by one of the directors.

Anything known about this man that might be seemingly unusual for a footballer ?

I don't mean he wore chiffon ball-gowns or had an enormous nose - there was something different about him - apparently dating back to 1869 in Scotland.
