Sheffield School of Art was established in 1843 as part of wider movements to improve art and design education outside of London. A council of local influential individuals was appointed to run the School, though it was ultimately accountable to the national School of Design in London. The original aims of the School were to nurture local design talent in order to improve the profitability of the Sheffield metalwork trade and to create a greater consciousness of design within the city.
