RichardB
http://www.sbg.org.uk/historydetail.asp Extract : How it all began In 1833 the Sheffield Botanical and Horticultural Society was formed to promote both healthy recreation and self education, through the development of a botanical garden. By 1834 they had raised £7,500 through shares, and had bought 18 acres of south-facing farmland from Joseph Wilson (of the snuff family, still trading today) at £200 per acre. The Gardens were finally opened on the 29th and 30th June, and 4th and 5th July, 1836, when more than 12,000 visited them.
Guest JackD
One of our favourite walks as kids, going onto Endcliffe woods. We used to climb onto the bear pit wall and jump in to the leaves the keepers put there to rot down. There were two large cannon stored in the glass houses, don't know what happened to them, maybe someone on here might have an idea. Jack.
SteveHB
The Bear Pit housed two bears until the 1870's when they were removed, following an incident when a child fell into the pit and was killed. It has a pair of side dens that were used to house the bears.

There was a mention of the cannon on another forum a while ago, and it was suggested they were moved to the Territorial Army HQ at Endcliffe Hall. Guest JackD
Bayleaf, thanks for that. I did know there was some controversy about the guns, JackD
