Rumor goes that it was sometimes used by families for making a big stew and also for bathing the baby .. I never knew they called them setpots, we use to call them copper boilers. I remember mother standing me in it to wash me down but I had to keep hopping about because it use to get quite warm under foot. I hope she didn't do the stew in it as well. lol

Wonderful to read all the comments regarding setpots, we had one and it was used for doing the weekly wash and bathing my sister and I when we were little, but not with the fire underneath!,my dad removed it and had gas boiler put in,remember them? My mother had a saying when anyone had a glum face or looked displeased she used to say"They had a face like a setpot"
