Bayleaf
If Stuart's right,it could be Viscount Wolesley, Commander in Chief of the Army and the officer in charge of the Nile Campaign to rescue Gordon of Khartoum. A lot of the streets round there are named after famous soldiers.
neddy
I sure recall a couple of this type of plaque taken out of the demolished housing around Wolsley Road area, and reinstated into newer property.

Calvin72
On a short road in Nether Edge/Sharrow, Ventnor Place, there appears to be an identical head on the front of a house. Curious and curiouser.

tozzin
Is this my photo from my article in the Retro? The head can be seen on Abbeydale Road? There is another one of these heads on a road in Sharrow, the man is called Wolsley, Wolsey Road was named after him. After checking my files THIS IS NOT MY PHOTO my picture shows the tile full face on.

This is where my research led me too. See Wikipedia Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley KP, GCB, OM, GCMG, VD, PC (4 June 1833 – 25 March 1913) was an Anglo-Irish officer in the British Army. He became one of the most influential and admired British generals after a series of successes in Canada, West Africa, and Egypt, followed by a central role in modernizing the British Army in promoting efficiency. He served in Burma, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, China, Canada and widely throughout Africa—including his Ashanti campaign (1873–1874) and the Nile Expedition against Mahdist Sudan in 1884–85. Wolesley served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1895 to 1900. His reputation for efficiency led to the late 19th century English phrase "everything's all Sir Garnet", meaning, "All is in order
