Martha Rodgers, matron of the Children's hospital in 1881 was my gggrandmother. I didn't think that married women could have held posts like this. She was married to Barnett Rodgers, a tailor, who seems to have abandoned his wife and children soon after the youngest, Martha (my ggrandmother) was born in 1855. I've never found his death although Martha describes herself as a widow in 1881. She died the following year age 63 and is buried in the General Cemetery.
