Ponytail
The Blue Hospitals [The Duke of Norfolk’s hospitals, Shrewsbury Hospital, Broad Street], [1760] Shows men's and women's apartments, and the chapel. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;arc03672&pos=70&action=zoom&id=99232 This was the first Shrewsbury Hospital. Perhaps the Brown Hospital referred to the Hollis Hospital.
Ponytail
Just a thought did the inmates wear a "uniform" Could refer to the colour of the uniform. They weren't Hospitals as we know them.

They weren't Hospitals as we know them. Exactly. The Brown Hospital was Hollis' at the bottom of Snig Hill (with brown uniforms) and the Blue Hospital was the Shrewsbury Hospital (with blue uniforms).
