The toll was a halfpenny for pedestrians and a penny for a horse and driver. The toll keeper from about 1923 was Joseph Gleadall, who was based in a little brick built cabin which had been put up with the original bridge which replaced a ferry (ferry operational in 1850). The bridge was used by workers wanting to get from Tinsley to Kimberworth and the nearby works, saving bus and tram fares.

The original site of the bridge was just to the East of the 10” rolling mill of The Tinsley Rolling Mills Co.. I joined them in 1959 and workman talked about the halfpenny bridge but I think by then it had been demolished…I certainly don’t remember seeing it.

Footbridge over the River Don at its confluence with the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal.
Plaque on the bridge reads "Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation. Halfpenny Bridge. Erected AD 2001."

This is a new foot bridge on the site of an old toll bridge. The charge to cross from one side to the other was one 'half penny' hence the name.

The building to the right of the first pic is of the 10” mill of Tinsley Rolling Mills and to the left the building is a part of WTFlather Ltd.
