BMJ214 Posted February 14 Share Posted February 14 Hi all. I’ve been trying for years. I don’t know a thing about him. Not even his name. My grandma wouldn’t talk about him. Her mum wouldn't so my mum had no idea. I’ve checked my grandmas birth and baptism certificates. He’s not on any registers. I’ve used Anchestry and Find My Past. I’ve emailed Sheffield Archives to see if they have any info from the Workhouse. My grandma was born in 1929 and her brother in 1930. I think the last option is the DNA test but it’s £70!!! BMJ214 Posted February 15 Author Share Posted February 15 Hi I’ve checked the 1939 Register. There were 5 people living together…. 1. Maggie Anderson (my grandmas mum) age 40 Head of the house 2. Richard Anderson age 33 Relationship: Unknown d.o.b 27/05/1906 Single - This is Maggies brother but it says relationship unknown 3. Jean Anderson (my grandma) age 10 Relationship: Daughter 4. The record of this person is officially closed - Not sure what that means. 5. Harry Cooper age 26 Relationship: Unknown d.o.b 15/03/1913 Single - I’ve no idea who he is. MartinR Posted February 16 Share Posted February 16 If a person's entry is closed it means that the register has had no proof of the death of the person. I'm sure there are errors, but theoretically the identity of a living person is protected; "living" in this context means not proved to be dead. After 100 years the assumption is that all are dead, which is why census records are released at that point. In your specific case, is it possible that entry 4 is your great-uncle? Hi I tried but I thought you needed info on who the person is for it to be opened. I don’t think she was ever in a relationship with the dad.
