Richard Vessey
The 1851 map shows the School with Portobello Tavern backing on to it, on the corner of Portobello and Victoria Street. From White's in 1828 this was shown as a Ladies School (18 Portobello), then in 1833 Mary Ann Tozer (née Witton) was School Mistress there. In 1841 Mary Ann Tozer was running a Ladies Boarding & Day Seminary there (203 Bath Buildings) and she remained at No. 7 running a school until her death in 1869. It is understood that she owned this building and shared it with her son, Edward Tozer (1820 -1890) before he married in 1852, who became managing director of Sanderson Brothers & Co. steel works, then went on to a partnership in Steel, Peech & Tozer steelworks. On 1889 map, the Jessop Hospital had been built on the opposite side of Victorian Street to the school, and No. 7 had become Victoria Street Works (Curtain Rollers). Does anyone have a photograph of the No. 7 Victoria Street premises as either a School or Works?
