Sheffield Royal Trains

After an absence of several years, Sheffield Royal Trains is now again avaible on the RCTs website.  Now included in Haulage Highlights which also contains several other highlights with a Sheffield connection.

The intention is to list the varioues visits of Royalty to Sheffield when the Royal Train has been used.  Contributions welcomed, particularly with regard to the locomotives and carriages used.

With regard to  the reference for 27th October 1954 there appears to be conflicting referrences regarding whether HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Duke of Edinburgh actually visited Sheffield or not.  However, I've found a reference to a commerotive booklet being produced for such a visit.

There is ia reference to the Royal Train being hauled by two B1's 61248 Geoffrey Gibbs and 61250 A. Harold Bibby between Retford and Barnsley, but no details as to the precise route.

Has anyone knowledge of the visit to River Don Works?  Similarly the routing of the Royal Train?  Quite possible the Royal Train paused on its journey so that the Royal party could visit the works,

Local Studies had a card index reference to Royal Visits which some years ago they made available to search online and also produced a study guide where to find references to Royal Visits to Sheffield.

NB. The study guide Royal Visits end at 2015.

May not have been "The Royal Train" but a Royal Visit by train.

After launching the Japanese battleship Katori built by Messrs Vickers Sons and Maxim at Barrow the day before, Prince and Princess Arisugawa detrained at a special platform erected at the River Don Works to see the guns for the Katori being made. 5th July 1905.

Thanks Ponytail for the links etc.   As mentioned, the particular focus of Sheffield Royal Trains on the RCTS website is give details of the trains used for the Royal Visits.    Little is reported about these other than when qarrival / departure is connected with the formalities.   Security concerns always having been a factor.   Thus, pictures oif the trains are actually quite rare.

I knew I had posted previously on the topic, thought it had been in Buses, Trams & Trains.  Thanks to your link to Royal visits to Sheffield I now realise it was in Sheffield History Chat.

The Sources for the Study of Royal Visits to Sheffield is a very useful document which I have reffered to.   Usefully confirms whether sightings of the Royal Train in the Sheffield area correlate with visits or whether just passing through.

Checking through the various references mentioned by Ponytail it now appears quite clear that the Royal Train must have gone direct to Barnsley from Retford.    The Royal part continuing by road to Wombwell, Rotherham and Sheffield.  References suggesting that they didn't re-join the Royal Train until the following day in Bradford.

Quite possible through they spent the night of 27th/28th October 1954 on the Royal Train.  If so, likely to have been stabled somewhere in the Barnsley area.
