As a child in the 1940/50s I lived in a Council house which was plagued with silver fish My Mum was “ashamed “when the Council “Bug men” came to fumigate the place.

I never hear of said silver fish these days. I wonder are they still around?

Thanks  ponytail…..The windows were sealed and , as I recall ,fabric sheets were put around the room and then I believe a gas was introduced…but it could have been DDT….whatever, we were forbidden to re enter for some time.

Zyklon B was used as a fumigant pesticide, later renamed "Cyclone B" and then "Cyclone Cap Vert" due to the connection to the Holocaust.  It's not been much used since 1974, but this would cover the period under consideration.

What a nightmare, can see why your mother was so upset. A very proud lady no doubt.

In those days that was not uncommon!

Martin’s revelation is rather alarming! Good grief!
