Broombank House, Glossop Road

Looking for help/information to determine the location of Broom Bank House (Broombank House) on Glossop Road, former home of John Vickers (1768-1842) Britannia Metal manufacturer.

Whites Directory had his residential address in 1833 and 1837 as Broom Hill/Broomhill, Henry & Thos. Rodgers Sheff & Roth Directory (1841) listed Broom Bank, Glossop Road and his burial record stated his abode as Glossop Road. Similarly, John and his wife Ann are listed at Broomhill on the 1841 census.

From https://hawleysheffieldknives.com/, "[John Vickers] died at Broombank House, Glossop Road, on 21 May 1842 and was buried in St Peter’s churchyard."

Since Francis Newton was named as a executor in John Vickers' will, I had initially assumed that he died at Newton's home, Broom Bank House on Clarkehouse Road, now the Wetherspoons' pub.

However, from R.E. Leaders' "Sheffield in the Eighteenth Century" and "Reminiscences of Old Sheffield", John Vickers:

  • "...[died] at Broombank House, Glossop Road, built by Mr. B. Micklethwaite, merchant, West Street."
  • "...died at Broom Bank, the residence of the late Rev. Thomas Howarth. The house was built by Mr. B. Micklethwaite, merchant, of West street."

My research shows that Francis Newton built his Broom Bank House for himself, so perhaps there's be another house with the same name near Glossop Road?

This map from 1851 shows a Broombank House on Glossop Road near the junction with Clarkehouse Road.

Is this fair to assume that this was John Vickers' house, built by Benjamin Micklethwaite, and later lived in by Rev. Thomas Howarth?

Furthermore, is it the house that was initially purchased by Sir Charles Clifford for the Dental Hospital, only to be demolished to build the Hallamshire Hospital?

I've seen this thread with some aerial photos from the 1920s-1950s, but does anyone have any further information or photos/images of Broombank House? Where could I look to find records of it being sold, etc?

Thank you!

The House labelled Broombank House, Glossop Road next to Five Oaks on the 1889 Map isn't labelled on the 1850's map. What appears to be 3 separate properties on Glossop Road/Clarkehouse Lane (1850's map) are labelled Broom Bank.

"Broom Bank House" built by Francis Newton is above the label "Broomspring Vale" (1850's map)

Shown on 1889 OS Map 294.11.3 as "Broom Bank"

We need to recognise that there are two separate places - Broom Bank House (north of Glossop Road) and Broom Bank (a group of six houses south east of Clarkehouse Road). This is not helped by "Broom Bank House" being widely referred to as "Broom Bank", and the southermost house in the group along Clarkehouse Road being called Broom Bank and Broom Bank House (see 1865 sale document above)

This extract from Rodgers 1841 Directory shows John Vickers listed as at "Broomhill" however his neighbours are the same ones listed as "Broom Bank" in the Directory. The same directory separately lists a John Webster, gentleman as being at "Broom Bank" - presumably Broom Bank House, north of Glossop Road

In November 1844 an auction included "The LEASEHOLD DWELLING HOUSE formerly occupied by Mr Benjamin Micklethwaite, and afterwards by the late Mr Joshua Hawksley, situate on the South side of, and fronting to Glossop road, in Sheffield, together with the Counting House, Warehouse, Workshops, Stable and Carriage House at the back of the said Dwelling-house" . The 1841 Rodger Directory puts Mr Hawksley at 261 Glossop Road.

Wondered if this was same plot of land as arc03584 both plans show J(ames) Crawshaw owning the bordering land and this plan shows William Butcher having land bordering it.
