Henry Willis, steel manufacturer, Carlton Steel Works, Attercliffe.

Willis, Henry, manager, Nether Edge.

Willis, Frank (H & Son) h. 6 Sharrow Head. 

Willis, Henry, (H & Son) h. Sharrow, Head Terrace. 

Willis, Henry & Son, steel manufacturers, Renton Street. 

 

Had Henry Willis just started out as a steel manufacturer in 1861/2.

Was Carlton Steel Works near Carlton House?

April 1856 Henry was a book-keeper and married Hannah Adcock of Spalding at Holy Trinity, Wicker
March 1859 at son Frank's baptism Henry was a commercial traveller living at Ecclesall Road
March 1861 an Iron and Steel Broker at Nether Edge estate
April 1861 Willis was manufacturing his own steel at the Carlton Steel Works, Attercliffe (may have been an outbuilding belonging to Carlton House?)
April 1863 moved from Attercliffe to more commodious premises at Mill Lane (to become Renton street),    Ecclesall Road, and re-named Carlton Steel Works
June 1868 Bought Frederick Shaws Wire Mill at Dam Flask
April 1871 was living at 121 Cemetery Road with wife Hannah, son Frank, employing 9 men and 1 boy
March 1879 Hannah died
December 1884 Bankruptcy examination. Official Receiver said his books were the best kept he had ever seen
April 1891 was living at 32 Chesterfield road with wife Ursula, he was a steel merchant and seems to no longer to be manufacturing
27th May 1895 died aged 63, buried at City Road

Quite a difference.. Bookkeeper to steel manufacturer.. Obviously good at bookkeeping, unfortunately didn't help him from going bankrupt.
