Bildeborg
This I find very interesting. My 3rd great grandfather was a Joseph Ashforth (1838-1896). He was born in Birmingham to George Ashforth (a Sheffielder who went to Birmingham for his apprenticeship) and Leah Webb who was the daughter of George's boss. My Joseph was a filesmith but clearly not the above Joseph but I have no doubt there must be a connection as Ashforth is not such a common name. 1851 census for Joseph Ashforth living at Bacon Island, Sheffield, Yorkshire is thus GEORGE ASHFORTH......HEAD......AGE 37......FILE CUTTER LEAH ASHFORTH......WIFE......AGE 35 JOSEPH ASHFORTH......SON......AGE 13......FILE CUTTER <-------------------- SOPHIA ASHFORTH......DAU......AGE 10......SCHOLAR JOHN B ASHFORTH......SON......AGE 8......SCHOLAR EMMA ASHFORTH......DAU......AGE 6......SCHOLAR SUSANNAH ASHFORTH......DAU......AGE 2 WILLIAM ASHFORTH......SON......AGE 1 MONTH ***Spelled ASHFORD on census. 1861 census for Joseph Ashforth living at 8 Bacon Island, Sheffield, Yorkshire is thus DAVID FLETCHER......HEAD......AGE 49......FILE SMITH MARY ANN FLETCHER......WIFE......AGE 56 JOSEPH ASHFORTH......SON IN LAW......AGE 23......FILE SMITH <---------- MARY ANN ASHFORTH......DAU......AGE 21 EMMA FLETCHER [ASHFORTH]......{GRAND}DAU......AGE 5......SCHOLAR GEORGE ASHFORTH......GRANDSON......AGE 1 The 1871 census for Joseph Ashforth living at back 133 Milton Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire is thus JOSEPH ASHFORTH......HEAD......AGE 33......FILE FORGER MARY A ASHFORTH......WIFE......AGE 31......FILE CUTTER EMMA ASHFORTH......DAUGHTER......AGE 14......FILE CUTTER 1881 census for Joseph Ashforth living at Milton Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire is thus JOSEPH ASHFORTH......HEAD......AGE 43......FILE FORGER MARY ANN ASHFORTH......WIFE......AGE 41 1891 census for Joseph Ashforth living at Milton Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire is thus JOSEPH ASHFORTH......HEAD......AGE 52......FILE SMITH MARY ANN ASHFORTH......WIFE......AGE 51 JOSEPH ADDY......GRANDSON......AGE 15......FILE STRIKER AND HEATER I have my Ashforth line back to George Ashforth, born ~1753 at Ecclesfield.
