Find this confusing: Was the Palmerston Works formerly occupied by Broadhead, Hall & Co.? Or Is it a different George Wilkin and he was a former employee of them? Established 1825: Was the Works established 1825? Or Broadhead, Hall & Co.? George Wilkin was in business for himself at 83 Eldon Street from at least 1852-1862
Edmund
Certainly confusing - there were two Georges - father (b 1817 son of William a razorsmith) and son (b1859), they simultaneously had both the Palmerston Works on Broad lane and the Eldon Works on Eldon street. George Snr's married life was somewhat chaotic, he was estranged from his wife Mary Ann and possibly married again. George Snr died aged 72 on12th July 1890 and was buried at Fulwood and his son died of heart failure aged 33 on 12th February 1892, and was buried at Fulwood. George Junr was the organist at St Stephens, Eastwood, Rotherham. The works, corporate mark and some houses were sold to Mr A E Furniss of the Eagle Works, Carver street in April 1892 (see advertisement below). Possibly the Eldon Works were rented. The advert referring to Broadhead and Hall and "established 1825" is odd - I can't find any mention of Broadhead and Hall, and George would have been 8 years old in 1825. Ponytail
I was beginning to think I'd iost the plot! Thanks for sorting the George Wilkin query out. Perhaps it was a bit of fancyful advertising to impress.
