Underwood House, 152 Burngreave Road was first referred to in the 1841 Census, Henry Cadman, son of Charles Cadman residing there. Henry's son George Edward recorded in 1879 Directory as his home address.

It was bought at the turn of the 20th century by the Catholic Church to be a Convent and Private School. Many alterations and additions being made.

(Information with the photograph)

The Sisters of Mercy came in 1883 from the Order's Convent in Commercial Road, London to teach at St. Catherine's School. They first lived on Andover Street, then by 1898, moved to Underwood House, Burngreave Road. The 1902 Trade Directory reads, 152, St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Convent, Middle Class High School and School of Music, Mrs Anna MacDonald, lady superior. The establishment closed in 1979 and eventually became a nursing home. Dorothy Hearn attended the Convent High School, leaving in 1919, aged 16. She went on to Whiteley's Commercial College.

Would be good to have the 1850s map  outline of the property.
