Mr. William Hall of the Alma Works, Barker-pool is a large manufacturer of steel, files, edge-tools, saws etc. The firm has been extensively known in the trade for seventy or eighty years. It has acquired a high reputation for the manufacture of these articles. The premises of the firm were originally in Porter Street, whence they were removed, from the necessity of extension to the present works in Barker-pool. The accompanying sketch gives an idea of the extent. The illustrations of grinding and file cutting, which accompany the description of the processes are taken from the manufactory at the Ama Works. 

In erecting the present buildings, great attention has been paid to sanitary requirenents, which in the construction of such works were formerly altogether overlooked. 

The forging shops instead of being each a small separate building as used to be the case are open to each other for the purpose of  ventilation through the whole length of the building without anything to break the free current of air. There is every convenience for carrying on the various trades and furnaces for the conversion and casting of the best kinds of steel have been erected since the original construction of the works.
