Ponytail
Moses Eadon & Sons, manufacturers of steel, files and saws, President Works, Savile Street East. President Works are the business premises of another extensive house in the saw trade, Messrs. Moses Eaden and by the excellence of his manufactures, aided by the enterprise and energy of his sons, who now carry it on. The house has rapidly risen to that of one of the first in the trade. Saw making has wonderfully improved of late. Up to the beginning of the present century, saws worked by machinery were unknown. Since that period there have been brought into use the circular saw; the balk or timber frame saw, cutting six deals at one time; the segment saw; 20 feet in diameter; cutting Honduras mahogany 5 feet wide and 16 veneers to the inch; the endless-band saw with its perpetual cut, doing its work with marvellous truth and cerelity. These and other changes have called for improved methods in manufacture, which have been carried out by no firm more fully than by Messrs Eadon and Sons. The solid endless band or belt saw is patented by Messrs. Eadon. It is of the greatest use in cutting large timber and may be seen with Messrs, Eadon's other saws at work in the Government dockyards. A circular saw shown by Messrs. Eadon in the Exhibition is believed to be the largest ever made. It is 7 feet 2 1/2 inches in diameter. In this description of saws, contrasted with those which preceeded it, the progress is very remarkable. Fifty years ago a pit-saw was used in the saw-pit and with it two men painfully toiled along, getting through a tree probably in the course of a day. The circular saws have come into use and have progressed till we have the enormous one alluded to, with which a man might cut his way through the thickest timber as fast as he could walk. The President Works are situated in Savile Street East, on the Midland Railway and there, Messrs Eadon & Sons manufacture not only saws but also steel, files, tools, machine knives & etc. They roll steel for crinoline and also make steel for the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. Messrs Eadon and Sons have extensive demand for their goods in this country and also in Russia and Canada. It is in saws that the great reputation of the firm consists. The solid saw tillars or buckles which are now so generally adopted by the trade were first made by Messrs. Eadon. Solid cylinder saws are made here of the largest size and also the finest saws used in the most delicate surgical operations.
