The small alley on the left is Pepper Alley part of which is still with us , it runs along the right hand side of the Upper Chapel on Norfolk Street.

At one of the Cutlers' Feasts during the 1840's, three special singers were engaged: Messrs Dyson, Straw and Pratt.  During the speeches they had "refreshers" and by the time they were dispensed with at nearly midnight, they were well tipsy.  When they got to Johnson's Glass and China shop, above the Catholic church, George Straw, who was very merry, said that he'd have a lark with old Joseph Johnson.  He put his back to the shop's shutters and his banging caused the glass and crockery to fall from the window shelves.  Straw kept at it, and Johnson put his head out of the chamber window and shouted "Watch!".  The three jolly singers then ran away, but Straw ran straight into a watchman's arms.  However he said to the watchman "Run, God bless you, run, there's a man murdering a woman! Run while I fetch somebody else".  The watchman let Straw go and he was never found out.

George Straw died on 29th March 1843 aged 38 "for many years an efficient member of the Sheffield Choral Society".
