Brass Bands

How many Brass Bands are there still in the Sheffield area? Who were they and what happened to them?  Over the years there has been Prize Bands, Colliery Bands, Works Bands, Military Bands, Temperance Bands, School Bands, Police Bands and not forgetting The Salvation Army Brass Band (Sally Army). It wasn't Christmas until you'd heard them play.

Bands played in the Parks, Public Celebrations, Royal Visits, raised money for Charity, took part in Competitions and for those of us of a certain age, the Half Time Marching Brass Band at football matches. A big cheer went up when they marched off, was it in appreciation or "Good, second half to begin?" Playing and marching in front of a large crowd, intimidating enough, without a crowd giving derision. 

The film "Brassed Off" showed how a Band kept a Community together and gave focus. "The Full Monty" where the band kept going even though the Works had closed. 

Looking at Brass Bands who played in the Parks to Celebrate the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902, wondered what happened to them.

Grimesthorpe Band who played that weekend in Firth Park are posted under their own heading with a history upto early 1900's. Are they still going?

Temperance Band, Ecclesall Band, Sheffield Recreation Band, Spital Hill Band, City Police Band, Tinsley Park Band, Neepsend Gas Works Band, Nether Hallam Band, Pitsmoor Band, Newhall Band, Water Dept Band, Artillary Volunteer Band. 

Also active at that time, Upperthorpe Military Band, Hallamshire Rifles Band and Dannemora Brass Band.

Picture Sheffield has several photographs of Unidentified Brass Bands, not even knowing if they are from Sheffield. They're somebodies relatives and might have a story to tell. Newspapers sometimes report on Band Competitions.
