King Edward VII Coronation Celebrations 1902

Fascinating. Will Sheffield celebrate in a similar fashion next year? Do we have a comprehensive list of civic worthies and industrialists comparable with 1902?  Somehow I doubt we will…not least being a lack of civic pride…but, who knows?

As well as flags, bunting and illuminations in the streets, there was a decorated electric tramcar for the great and the good (Mayor, councillors, managers of the Tramways Department etc). Its initial run was out to Darnall and back, then on the Abbeydale section followed by a run towards Ecclesall. It was intended to make a circular tour round Ranmoor, but the thoughtfulness of the Highways Department in depositing several tons of paving material on the tracks at the bottom of Jenkin Hill meant that the tram had to retrace its route, returning to the town centre by 11pm.  The tram left the Tinsley shed again the following evening, with a programme being published of its route  for the benefit of spectators.

A suggestion perhaps for SYPTE and Stagecoach Supertram for next May?

Indeed, does Sheffield still have a Master Cutler? He was obviously a man of considerable standing at that time.

EDIT: indee it does. She is Dame Julie Kenny. Now there's progress for you.

Yes, a Ceremony and Cutlers Feast  occurs every year.

I wonder how many of the attendees are involved in the cutlery trade.

I'm pleased to learn, via Wiki, that the Master Cutler express train still runs from Sheffield to London, though it's not quite what it used to be.

Very few, if any are cutlers.Sheffield and Hallamshire is no longer a major manufacturer of cutlery, steel, hand tools, heavy engineering, cutting tools… one could continue ad infinitum…. But we do have shipping containers in our City centre.😆😆😆

Interesting tram tour, but where was Jenkin Hill, there isn't one in Sheffield now?

Jenkin Hill ran from the junction of Nethergreen Road and Oakbrook Road in an approximately northerly direction to Fulwood Road. At around the time of the 1902 Coronation it became a northern extension of Hangingwater Road. It features in the 1901 Whites directory but not in the 1905 version.
