John Turner
Does anyone recall a busy row of shops in City Road opposite Sky Edge Road Sheffield? I recall Wild's Butchers and Shaw's fruit & veg alongside a grocery, a sweets & tobacco and an ironmongers owned by my parents Clarrie & Wilfred Turner. The ironmongery was run by my Uncle Charlie (Taylor) an ex Royal Engineer. As a very young boy I remember packing the grocery 'orders' into big cardboard boxes for delivery on Fridays and Saturdays in our Jowett van to the Norfolk and Granville Road area and the Parsons Cross Estate. As the age of the supermarket chains dawned, the livelihood from small shops came under serious threat and we left Sheffield in 1956 to go first to Flamborough and then Bridlington in the East Riding. Edmund
Here's an extract from Kelly's Directory for 1957 for that part of City Road.
John Turner
Bulls Eye! - thank you Edmund. My mother, Mrs Clarice Turner, was indeed the proprietor of City Road shops Nos 782 / 204 / 214. The Kelly's directory entry has reminded me of a few other shops that we frequented as children.
