Ecclesall/Bents Green - Hilltop

Before I head off to the Local Archive and start digging, I thought I'd ask if anyone has come across any research on the development of the Hilltop area of Ecclesall/Bents Green? I take this to be the area bounded by Trap Lane to north and east, Ringinglow Road to the south, and Common Lane to he west

From the deeds of our house, it appears that our place was the first to be developed in this area from around 1920, aside from properties in Latham Square, Hilltop House, and Bents Green Lodge (now School)

Images show maps of the area in question from 1919, 1920, and 2022.

The scheme seems to have originated before the first world war with Albert George and Alfred Christopher Burnett, coal merchants (Burnett Bros & Co, Change Alley) and house builders of Brentwood Road, Nether Edge.

This may be the 1905 sale that gave ownership to the Burnetts. The Lawton mentioned was Joe (born 1841 a farmer) and the Coates was Philip a landscaper and gardener (born 1871) :

Below are a series of newspaper advertisements which show the progress, and illustrate the difficulties of being a property magnate during wartime.

One of the main builders on the estate was George M Taylor, who based himself at 58 Muskoka Drive from 1922.  In 1920 he was supplying building materials from 28 Change Alley, the Burnett's Coal Sales Office.
