Hi

I have a few relatives who lived on Green Street in the early 1900s but can't find out where it is/was. Am I right in thinking it is Balm Green??

Green Street, by 14 Bishop Street & Moore Street was located in what is now the Wickes car park just off Young Street at the bottom of the Moor.

Nice one southside! Thanks. Just depends now on 'which one' Andrea's family lived.

There were many street name changes when the area north of the River Loxley became part of Sheffield instead of the West Riding aound the turn of the end of the nineteenth century. This was because many of the street names were duplicated between Sheffield & the West Riding. Aparently it was causing the Royal Mail problems. Green Street (W,R.) became Greenock Street. Providence Road (W.R.) became Portsea Road and various other roads were renamed. Milden Road (W.R.) became Minto Road and I can remember an old cast iron road sign that stated Minto Road (formally Milden Road).

There was a reminder of the previous boundary at the near end of Claywheels Lane where the West Riding had a road repair depot well within the new boundary.

As a kid I remember the old steam road rollers left to cool down when the fire boxes were raked out in the 1950's. They made a range of clicks and bangs as they cooled down.

There was a Green Street just here

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=20&lat=53.37485&lon=-1.47657&layers=168&right=117746211

on the NLS maps.

And Greenhow Street is just here

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=19&lat=53.39265&lon=-1.50190&layers=168&right=117746211

Details of the houses on the 1890 maps are quite good!
