Hi All ,

 

We will be holding several history events over the next few months. Of particular interest to many of you will be the day of talks that we have planned for Saturday 1^st August on the Battles of Agincourt, Bosworth and Waterloo. This will be an afternoon session, with food provided after as well as the opportunity to quiz the lecturers with any questions you have about the events, and the circumstances surrounding them. We hope to make this into an annual event focussing on different topical events and anniversaries.

Thursday 14^th May  – Darnall History Walk - This circular walk of about 2 miles around the centre of Darnall will look at the growth of the area from a medieval village to becoming a central part of Sheffield’s Industry. It will also include the tale of Charles Peace – a notorious 19^th Century Sheffield murderer, who was subsequently mentioned in Sherlock Holmes novels, as well as the possible site of the Battle of Brunenbargh. Starting and ending at the junction of Staniforth Road and Prince of Wales Road. 13.00-15.00 approximately. £5 fee. Booking in advance is essential as there limited places.

 

Wednesday 20^th May – Emergency Planning Exercise - The Old Queens Head, Sheffield, 10.30 – 3.30

This will be a ‘Crisis Management Simulation’ encompassing a whole day, with a short break for lunch. Students will take the role of civil, military and emergency services personnel dealing with a crisis and making a series of realistic decisions. Much of the background is based on actual exercises conducted, with much input from recently declassified material.

Participants will receive a planning and orientation brief to set the scene at the start of the situation, then the group will formulate a plan, working together to achieve an objective. At the end of the exercise there will be time to give feedback, and to have a short discussion about the event and history surrounding it. £10 fee, lunch not included, although the Queens Head does offer fantastic food, at very reasonable prices.

 

Thursday 21^th May – Firth Park and Wincobank History Walk - A circular walk of just over 2 miles with the story of how the area got its name, its significance during the industrial revolution as well many of the characters in this areas illustrious past and development. This walk will also incorporate Wincobank Hill Fort, and does have a couple of steep sections. Starting and ending at the school entrance on Hatfield House Lane. 13.00-15.00 approximately. £5 fee. Booking in advance is essential as there limited places.

 

Thursday 28^th May – Porter Valley History Walk - A linear walk of about 2 miles along the Porter Valley from Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam Café. This walk will look at the industrial heritage of the area, including how the industry grew up in Sheffield along the rivers, as well as the site of a WW2 Bomber crash site. Starting at the Endcliffe Park entrance by Hunters Bar, and ending at Forge Dam Café. There is a bus service nearby which can take you into town, or alternatively walk back down the valley to Ecclesall Road. 13.00-15.00 approximately. £5 fee. Booking in advance is essential as there limited places.

 

Thursday 4^th June – The First World War Sheffield Blitz in Burngreave - A 1.5 mile walk through the area of the Sheffield Blitz in the First World War. On the night of Monday 25th September 1916 a single Zeppelin dropped 36 bombs in a line between Burngreave and through Attercliffe to Darnall – looking at where some of the bombs fell, and what has become of the area now. Starting and ending at the entrance to Burngreave Cemetery on Melrose Road/Burngreave Street. 13.00-15.00 approximately. £6 fee. Booking in advance is essential as there limited places.

 

Saturday 1^st August – The 2015 Annual Summer History Lecture on the Battles of Agincourt (1415), Bosworth (1485) and Waterloo (1815). To be held at the Polish Catholic Centre, Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PY, 13:00-16:00.

This will be the first of many annual lectures we intend to deliver to commemorate the anniversaries of topical events. This year we have chosen a military theme which highlights the re-interment of Richard III and the Bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo. There will be a £15 charge for this afternoon of talks, with short breaks in between for refreshments, following which food will be provided, and guests will be invited to question the lecturers and circulate to discuss the talks and their classes. Booking is strongly recommended as space will be limited. Please feel free to get in touch if there are any questions.

We are also presently working on organising some more trips for the end of the summer term, both day and overnight trips. We are also planning a new evening class now that the weather is finer, and the evenings lighter. Finally, watch this space for a military history summer school that will be taking place throughout August.
