Guest Carole Rickwood
Hello My great grandfather was a carter at the Gamister Works which was near Stoke Street. Does anyone have any info about this firm? Thank you Carole
Edmund
In February 1876 Chambers Brothers were at Blast lane (by the side of the canal basin). They moved to Stoke Street where they set up their Effingham Mill, making ganister and mortar products mainly for the steel moulding industry. Here's an advertisement: Chambers Bros Advert - Picture Sheffield Here's an 1890 map showing their premises: Changes to the company were published in the London Gazette: and in July 1909 Mary Young retired from the firm, leaving just Frank and Samson Chambers to run it. On 26th September 1899 an advert appeared in the Independent: "Ganister - Wanted, reliable MAN to Bore and get Ganister at Worrall by the yard - Apply stating experience and price to Chambers Bros, Stoke street, Attercliffe". They would have needed carters to bring the ganister in from outlying areas.
