vox
Whitworth, A (house furnisher) 294, 296 & 298 Ecclesall Road, Whites 1911. Recently uncovered whilst undergoing alterations. The present occupier informed me that the whole block to the left of the entrance and including Uncle Sams, once belonged to Whitworths. In the yard through the entrance is evidence of bricked up workshops which, he says, belonged to the firm. Looking at the present day fascias, there's a possibility that the whole sign is preserved along the rest of the frontage Nice sign don't you think ? Bayleaf
There must be quite a few of these hidden signs around Sheffield. I was speaking to someone the other day, and he told me his grandfather had a greengrocers shop, but he gave it up before he, the grandson, was born, though he knew which shop it was. Only a few years ago he happened to be passing the shop and work was being done on the frontage, and lo and behold there was his grandfather's name still there, hidden by a newer frontage.
