John Hawley of the Cricketers Arms, Bramall Lane had glowing testimonies from several cricket clubs and upstanding local residents, and was a cricket player himself. William Ellison of the Umpire Hotel, New George Street (now Boston Street) won however, largely because he was generally an umpire at matches and that trumped being a player.
