History dude
Information also on the people who put the plans together. ARUP as seen on all plans are consulting engineers. However as these piece from Wikipidea shows they have doubts about these plans for HST routes. Arup, which did the engineering work to identify routes for HS2 Ltd., has opposed the chosen route for HS2 (route 3) calling it "deeply flawed"[158] It says the route should link to Heathrow and then follow the M40 motorway and Chiltern railway line, improving the business case, lowering construction costs and creating less impact on the countryside
Stuart0742
Like other topics, this started as general information for members who live in Sheffield and away from Sheffield, however it will not become Sheffield History for at least 20 years, therefore I think it has run its course. Obviously there are some strong feelings on the subject, but this is not the Forum for these discussions.
lysander
It could already be history if the proposal should receive major changes over the years of "consultation"...a bit like the proposals for a Central station , a floating heli-pad etc. etc. All had their proponents and all had their opponents! Bayleaf
Whilst it's fun to speculate, it's all still really no more than conjecture where (or more likely if) the thing will get built. It certainly won't happen in my lifetime, if ever. The only way it will ever get past Brum is if they start building it from this end. One definition says 'history began yesterday', and this is at best decades in the future, so perhaps Stuart's right, and this discussion, like HS2, is going nowhere, at least not for a long time. History dude
Sheffield City Council are still pressing for it to go via Victoria. They say it will create 10,000 jobs as opposed to 3,000. It's getting closer to the deadline for fixing the route. It was covered by Look North last week again. The debate still is on the cost of going into Sheffield Centre and raising the cost even further. Personally I think it would be cheaper than knocking down loads of buildings in Tinsley.
