DaveH
Well, although it is on picture Sheffield it does say that the "photographer" is in fact an engraver and the picture is an engraving in this case. Now although a photograph is produced from an optical image and is therefore a perfect likeness to the original scene, an engraving is a more a work of art, and so is subject to a certain amount of "artistic licence" as to its accuracy by the artist who produced it. With this in mind, your question "whats wrong with this?", if it refers to the accuracy of some detail in the picture, - well, - it is only how the engraver remembered or pictured it and may not exactly match the reality of it. Accurate photographic records and skilled works of art both have their place, - so lets be realistic about what we should expect here.
RichardB
I've no problem with the content of the engraving, matter of fact my answer is in my original post. History dude
Do you mean it being called "church". Since in 1793 the date of the picture that would be correct. As it wasn't a Cathedral!
RichardB
Correct Bignose. Do you mean it being called "church". Since in 1793 the date of the picture that would be correct. As it wasn't a Cathedral!
DaveH
Correct Bignose. In which case there is nothing wrong with the picture, - or the caption either as pictureSheffield calls it the cathedral church, - sort of covering both eventualities. RichardB
Church (later Cathedral) would be more accurate for an image from 1793, St James' Row is probably incorrect as well (let the newer members come up with the original name). In which case there is nothing wrong with the picture, - or the caption either as pictureSheffield calls it the cathedral church, - sort of covering both eventualities.
