What year did they begin ? What were the earliest numbers and who had them ? Were they commercial companies, privaye individuals, government departments/council-types ??

So, the Tasker telephone exchange was on Angel Street and came to an end in 1888 due to the greater resources of the National Telephone Company .... Taskers site

Originally Tasker had just twelve subscribers ...

Short of asking Stuart the "telephone man" I think the oldest telephone system in Sheffield consisted of 2 old tin cans and a long length of string
