Bayleaf
The city planners have given the go-ahead for the old NUM HQ to be converted into a casino. The report even made the Grauniad yesterday, but the bit that puzzled me was the bit that said "The imposing block on Holly Street was designed in the shape of a colliery faceworker's pick." Can't say I ever noticed, has anyone else?

No idea where they got that idea from, but the former NUM HQ does resemble buildings seen at pit heads, like this one

Bayleaf
I suppose there is a joke in there somwhere I'd gamble! That makes a change from Student flats! Wasn't the frontage the premises of JG Graves? The present frontage was built for Sheffield Waterworks Company, but it looks like J G Graves took it over later Above each window and the door is a carved head, each representing a water god, but after the NUM moved in everybody swore the one over the door was a dead ringer for Arthur Scargill! Funny you should mention student flats. The same meeting gave the go-ahead for a £50m development of flats for 877 students on the site of the old Gordon Lamb showroom off Summerfield Street. The good thing is they're incorporating the River Porter into the design. Apparently part of the deal involves the developer coughing up £1m towards affordable housing and other public works. And there will be no parking provided for inmates (Sorry, residents). Students moving in and out at the start and end of term will have to pre-book half-hour parking slots. Bayleaf
It's certainly had many uses hasn't it. This pick thing, looking at Syrup's aerial view, do you think it might refer to that central section, pointed at one end and a 'spade tip' at the other, like the head of a pick? Stretching it a bit though, and not visible from street level.
