Redmires Water Treatment Works

As I understand it the Redmires Treatment Works was used as a pilot plant to develop a new treatment to rid moorland waters of their colouring.

Once the process was perfected the technology was transferred to a much bigger plant built down below in the Rivelin Valley. The Rivelin plant was built big enough to replace both plants. The Redmires plant was then mothballed.

The Redmires water is now allowed to flow naturally down the Wyming Brook and mixes with the Derwent Valley Scheme water before discharging into the lower Rivelin Dam for ongoing treatment.

There is still a covered treated water storage reservoir at Redmires within the plant and this feeds the higher districts of west & south-west Sheffield.

This is supplied by a new pipeline that runs from the Rivelin Plant across the fields to Lodge Lane & then up Redmires Road to the Redmires Plant.

The cost of pumping loads of water from the bottom to the top of the hill is obviously cheaper than keeping the Redmires Plant running.

There are a number of Yorkshire Water houses within the Redmires Plant which as far as I know are still occupied.

Obviously the draw off from the three dams still need to be regulated and there always seem to be plenty of Yorkshire Water workers around.

A permissive footpath runs through part of the treatment plant.
