Medal Index Cards

Afternoon,

I had a relative killed during the Great War and have a copy of his medal index card. On it, it just shows the medals he would have received and their are no remarks with regards to his death on the card. I have seen other cards and their is details of death and an address written.

Would information like this be generally be put on the cards or not? Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of the whereabouts of the medals, I have the death plaque, but with no supporting documentation.

His name was John Henry White gunner 786415 (and also 8682) of the Royal Field Artillery died April 1917 aged 20.

Thank you.

Chris.

Often the information would not appear on the card. I'll take a quick look into it to see if I can find more info. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission should have something.

Found it.

White, JH. Gunner 786415 27/04/1917 age 20. Royal Field Artillery United Kingdom I. D. 37. FEUCHY CHAPEL BRITISH CEMETERY, WANCOURT

http://www.cwgc.org/...casualty=301300

He was in "C" Battery, 232nd Brigade, RFA. Son of Robert and Elizabeth White, of 514, Wallace Rd., Sheffield.

It doesn't give any more info.

The cemetery is online at Find a Grave:

His grave is here:

The time of his death was just after the capture of Wancourt by the British, and after the Second Battle of the Scarpe (23–24 April 1917), all of which was part of the Battle of Arras.

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to have a look for me. I have most of this information already except for the information surrounding his death and what battle(s) he may have participated in. I would make the assumption thaty during the 2nd battle of the Scarpe, he may have been wounded and died a few days later?

Yeah, it's possible. Or he could have been killed during a counter-bombardment. I'd imagine there would have been a lot of shelling going on, even during times when there was no 'official' offensive. You could look into war diaries to see what the battery was doing on that exact date, but it may leave you no clearer on an exact cause or time of his death. I took a quick look and it seems 232 Bde became attached to an Army formation shortly before this time, so that may make the info a bit more difficult to find.

There's some more information here, telling about the RFA formations:

http://www.1914-1918...0oldversion.htm

If you're not conversant with Roman numerals 232 Bde is CCXXXII

All it says is that 232 Bde was a Territorial formation, 1st Line. In 46th Division from pre-war to January 1917. Redesignated from III North Midland Brigade on 13 May 1916. Left Division to become an Army Brigade.

If you really want to track down all the information that's available, I've researched three of my relatives and had good experiences with Fourteen/Eighteen Research at http://www.fourteeneighteen.co.uk/ .

Hi Dean,

yes John Henry White worked for the GPO in Sheffield (1911 census states his employent there as a 14 year old).

I have started a new topic with regards to other members of the family in this particular grave, with reference to James Wilmot White, who drowned in 1904 trying to save a boy. Have found a post that quotes the incident in Whitaker's Almanac.

Going to have to book some time off in the new year to look at some original documents!

Chris.
