RichardB
Where is/was Charlton Street in 1881 and why the big gap of eight unoccupied houses in a block ? Did another road cut through them later ? Where they demolished to make some other, larger, structure ? Not in isolation either : Numbers 17,19,21, 23, 29, 31, 41, 43, 49 and 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 , 32, 34, 36, 40, 42, 44 and 48. Change the question - why were some left standing ? Equally unanswerable lol

DaveH
Charlton St. is on one of the missing OS map sheets. Typical isn't it, The map coverage of the OS maps on this site is very high, we have the biggest majority of them. But whenever you want to look something up on one of them the chances of what you want to see being on one of the few missing maps seems to be disproportionately high.
