Hjdary
Had an hour to waste in town this morning and remembered this place near Kelham Island. Just out the back of the Fat Cat is the site of a old wheel race. Behind it is the mill pond with some large coloums in it. Does anyone know any thing about it...who was the wheel for and was the factory built above the pond? Heres a few of the shots took this morning.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/hjdary/P4220007.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/hjdary/P4229982.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/hjdary/P4229989.jpg
GrinderBloke
Good to see where the wheel was has been cleaned up, last time I was at The Fat Cat I had a look and the wheel pit was becoming overgrown with budlia and the like.
RichardB
"The whole region of Kelham Island is rich in the most unmitigated mud. Imagine kind reader you have passed through the portal of this dingy sanctuary of Vulcan; the first glimpse will convince you that you have entered the burning regions of Pandemonium." ------------------ 1858 - before the flood ! I thought this was a new post, I felt a shiver run up my spine seeing photos of my beloved Sheffield taken 'this morning' I think a tear came to my eye. Then I looked at the date - April 2007!! Sheepishly I wiped the tear from my cheek. Then, confusion and bewilderment. Four years and not a sniff! These pictures are the industrial heart throb of our city. Where are all the intrepid historians and researchers? There are correspondents out in the colonies thirsting for answers and information. Will we meekly pass by the Kelham Island Wheel and say to Hjdary "Sorry, no one knows anything about it" :P

Will we meekly pass by the Kelham Island Wheel and say to Hjdary "Sorry, no one knows anything about it" Having re-discovered the pictures I felt it right to bring them back to people's attention + the unspeakable mud around Kelham I thought might be of interest. Hopefully now we can get some links and information on this important site.
Bayleaf
I remember reading a while ago that once the mill race had been cleaned out they were going to install a water turbine as an experiment. Anyone know whether it went ahead?

SteveHB
Sheffield Independent November 1839 - a grand word "goit" Indeed it is dunsby, the word "goit" always tends to remind me of the word ' Gowt' I wonder if both words originated from the same ? 'Go it' - 'Go owt' sounds a bit like a bird calling :)
