A survey carried out on January 2nd 1615 showed Sheffield to have 2207 people, thus :

725 - the begging poor, not able to live without the charity of their neighbours

100 - those that relieve others; poor artificers; among them, not one who can keep a team on his own land; less that 10 who have ground of their own that will keepe a cow

160 - not able to releive others. Not beggars, but not able to abide the storm of one fortnights sickness, without being driven to beggary

1,222 children and servants
