dunsbyowl1867
Went to have a look at this place as my grandparents used to go camping here from Sheffield in the 1940/1950s. Noticed on an information board that this Sheffield Banker leased the canal in the 18th Century. Any information on Ellison and why he made such an investment (other than for profit of course!) RichardB
Went to have a look at this place as my grandparents used to go camping here from Sheffield in the 1940/1950s. Noticed on an information board that this Sheffield Banker leased the canal in the 18th Century. Any information on Ellison and why he made such an investment (other than for profit of course!) The canal was leased to several generations of the Ellison family, who profited from the tolls but failed to maintain it. When the railways arrived in Lincoln they leased the canal for 894 years, at £9,570 per year. Although cargos of coal and wool moved to the railway, the carriage of grain continued, and the last commercial operation was in 1972.
