RichardB
Serv(ant) Out of Place? Correct, the others looked more like "Sew" or even something anti-semitic ... visions of an early Invasion by the Third Reich !
DaveH
I've worked it out ... lets see what you think. Thats what I call "answering your own question" Have you also realised that all these census return sheets you are posting carry a copyright message on the bottom right, in big print but rotated sideways, saying that it is not to be reproduced photographically without permission of the records office. Hope we are OK with this as the census images can be quite useful.
Bayleaf
Serv(ant) Out of Place? Does that mean a servant away from their normal place of employment, or a servant without a place, i.e. unemployed?
DaveH
Does that mean a servant away from their normal place of employment, or a servant without a place, i.e. unemployed? As servents had to "live in" at their place of work and worked very long, hard hours and had very little free time or freedom to do anything they liked I suspect it would be the first one Bayleaf. It would perhaps be quite unusual to be away from their normal place of work and so worthy of mention.
