Serv(ant) Out of Place?

Correct, the others looked more like "Sew" or even something anti-semitic ... visions of an early Invasion by the Third Reich !

I've worked it out ... lets see what you think.

Thats what I call "answering your own question" lol

Have you also realised that all these census return sheets you are posting carry a copyright message on the bottom right, in big print but rotated sideways, saying that it is not to be reproduced photographically without permission of the records office. :o

Hope we are OK with this as the census images can be quite useful.

Serv(ant) Out of Place?

Does that mean a servant away from their normal place of employment, or a servant without a place, i.e. unemployed?

As servents had to "live in" at their place of work and worked very long, hard hours and had very little free time or freedom to do anything they liked I suspect it would be the first one Bayleaf.

It would perhaps be quite unusual to be away from their normal place of work and so worthy of mention.
