Guest Gramps
Longley Hall, Piper lane, (should be Longley lane) Sheet 288.16 Sheffield (Longley) 1902 Supposed to have been built between 1770 and 1790 the first recorded occupant was Kenyon Parker, a Sheffield attorney, who had married a daughter of the Shirecliffes of Whitley Hall. He was succeeded by his son Adamson Parker who lived here until his death in 1837. The house and contents plus about fifty acres of farmland were auctioned in 1838 and the 1841 census records a George Curr, described as a farmer, living here with his family. In 1851 the occupant was John Brookes, 'hosier and farmer' and after 1871 Robert Binder had the house and farm until in 1907 it was bought by the Sheffield Board of Guardians as a working farm to supply milk, pig-meat, eggs and poultry to the Fir Vale Workhouse. From then on the house was occupied by the farm manager or bailiff, — Herbert Lee Ibbotson until 1941 and then George Rigby until farming ceased in 1969. Mr. Rigby and his wife contimued in residence as caretakers until 1978. It seems the house then stood empty until 1980 when it was purchased and restored by Business Advisory Services (Northern) Ltd.
