Crosspool in the Great War

Great War - Crosspool

Hi all,

I'm currently starting to research the Great War history of Crosspool - I've just posted a request on the Sheffield Nightingales page for any info on Lydgate War Hospital between 1915 and 1919 but am also trying to find out about ANY servicemen from the area in WWI.

I've attached a list of the known men so far - this was found doing a street by street search of Ancestry's WWI Pension & Service Records for Crosspool streets and then also cross referencing with anyone I knew was here from 1901 onwards (i.e. names from 1901 census returns for Crosspool that are the right age bracket).

I know this could be a mammoth task but if anyone out there can spot missing ancestors etc then please let me know. I'd really like to build up this area's War story as it has never been recorded and as it stands I've already found two War dead who do not actually have a local memorial to be commemorated on.

As Ancestry get the rest of the Service records online (O onwards) I'll be able to get a fuller picture but this could still only be a list that is 50% complete unless anyone has any better ideas...

this is what i have on the Gosney's.

If it's the same family there were 6 of em' in 1901 at 301 Lydgate Lane. James, Ernest, Bernard, Herbert, George, and Charles, but Charles is listed on the census as being 2 years old ? Typo ?

George Gosney, 41752 Pte. 6th Yorks Regt. Died of wounds 12/10/17.

Son of Mary Ann Gosney, of Hagg Farm, Manchester Road.

Ernest Gosney, R/38128 Rifleman 11th K.R.R.C. Died. 30/11/17 ( so some other cause as opposed to KIA or D of Wd's ).

Son of the late Mr & Mrs John Gosney, husband of Margaret Ann Gosney.

These two appear on an headstone at Christ Church Fulwood, of which a have a copy if you need it.

I also have an Herbert Gosney, who was wounded while a driver with the R.F.A. I have a pic of this lad.

Then, if you take a look at the census results for the Gosneys, the next address down is Lydgate Hall, home of Horatio Bright. I'm sure there's a piece on Eric Youles web pages about him.

Well he had a son, Horatio H. Bright, which i think must be this lad, Horatio Harle Bright who was KIA. There is a discrepency in the date on the Flying Cert and his CWGC Cert.

PS Incidently the farm on Manchester Road is still known as Gosney's farm - Mary Gosney lived there up until a couple of years ago when she went into a home!

MARKS, Victor Wilfred: Cpl. 76463, 12th Battery, 35 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. DOW 02/04/18 age 26. GWGC gives parent’s address as 261 Sandygate Road.

PEACE Hubert Kirkby: Lt. 1st Lincolnshire Regiment. DOW 18/10/14 age 33. 1901 Census shows him living at 10 Tapton House Road, age 15.

SANDERSON, Fred: Army pensioner (former Lance Bombardier 191291, Royal Garrison Artillery) died 8/1/21. Born, lived and died at 26 Stephen Hill.

SMITH, Algernon Sydney, 2rd Lt. 57 Sqd, RAF. Killed whilst flying on 20/03/19 age 20. GWGC gives parents address as 5 Tapton Bank.

WILD John Henry: Pte. 202511, D Coy. 2nd/4th York & Lancs. KIA 20/07/18 age 25. GWGC gives parent’s address as 25 Tapton Hill Road.

Am I missing some posts? I haven't noticed any go walkabouts but I don't check this thread every day.

As a resident of Crosspool I'm trying to put together a comprehensive view of all the men from the area who served from our community in WWI. We have no local memorials (until the area was properly built up in the 30's people had to travel outside the area for established Churches*) and the idea is to try to find out who the casualties were, as well as those men who served and returned (I feel that the men who came back also deserve a place in our remembrances after the diffuclties they went through) but at the moment this period in Crosspool's history is somewhat of a gaping void.

Eventually I'd like to be able to share this info with the local community, particularly in places like the schools and churches so that events such as Remembrance day have more of a meaning to us locally. Hope this explains it all a little more...

*There was a 'temporary' Methodist chapel on Stephen Hill and the small Congregational Church at Tapton, but no Anglican, Baptist, Catholic etc

Me trying to keep up with all of everything; that's just what we don't need - Brain capacity smaller than input-overload ... better to pick a topic and see it through than to spend 2 years and find yourself "loopy" on one subject.

Really sorry to sound short, I think I misunderstood and I'm still trying to get to grips with stuff on the site! So far I've found it to be invaluable with all the info present and hope fully I'll be able to share my findings with everyone once it's (eventually) done.
