Agree with you on that transit, But I think a church would be more likely to revert to a boozer given the falling congregations at churches in Britain these days than a shop / supermarket as they seem to be appearing everywhere and never seem to be short of trade, - there must be a lot of profit in it. Guest transit
...found these pics of the Travellers in better days (94) during the tram system roadworks , before the overhead lines were installed ! - also note the petrol station and canopy between the buses ,now also gone! ........ ..also in photo 2 , i remember two semi detatched houses were demolished to make way for this large Supertram "bend" into Spring Lane , Norfolk Pk. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1705357 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1705380

( post 1 ) Took this pic of The Horse and Lion yesterday. We were on the tram at the time so perhaps it's not too clear, but I couldn't believe my eyes so I yelled to Mr Carly to grab a photo quick. Guest carlie167
Just a quick try with an "autocorrect" program comes up with this Thanks Dave, that looks better. Perhaps we ought to have got off the tram to take the photo, but it was a last minute job. I don't really know what to think about these pubs being turned into shops and churches, I suppose it's better than having them standing empty but they still look like pubs for heavens sake and to me they just don't look right. Ah well, I suppose it's because I remember them when they were thriving and I don't see those days coming back any time soon.

I agree with you (and transit in an earlier post) about the current use of previous pubs on the Norfolk Park Estate. Had you got off the tram it would have delayed you slightly as you would have had to wait around 10 minutes or so for the next tram to arrive to continue your journey. The tram service in Sheffield is excellent but to stop and wait while someone gets off to take a photo is beyond their call of duty. lol
Guest transit
...it makes you wonder where the new residents of Norfolk Park now go for a drink !!!! - used to have a big choice along the length , or walking distance ,of Park Grange Rd ! Jervis Lum - demolished Norfolk Park Tennants Ass Centre and Social Club (and great youth club !)- demolished Horse & Lion - shop Fellbrigg - church Vulcan - closed Captive Queen - church ...even a bit of a walk to the Olive Grove (closed) or the Travellers (shop) at the top and bottom end of NP , are no longer pubs! Guest transit
What is the current use of the Earl Marshall / Midhill Club on East Bank Road? Could you still get a drink there? ...yes ! - but for the majority of residents on NP , it is all downhill via Kenninghall to get there , but the dreaded uphill all way home !!! - as you can imagine , most prefer the other way round !!!! lol

Then again, if it's the only available pub. Worry about walking up the hill later. From what I have ready in the "Worst bus fire ever" topic it's enough to make a man consider stealing a bus to get home! :o

vox
...it makes you wonder where the new residents of Norfolk Park now go for a drink !!!! - The answer is that a lot of people probably won't. They'll sit at home with a £1 can of chemicals from the supermarket.

DaveH
- so probably why the Arundel and Manor clubs are still going , as they are on the every10min tram route ??? True, - and the tram runs the full length of Park Grange Road straight through the Norfolk Park Estate making it ideal for a boozing session in the City Road clubs. But I don't think they are exactly packed out are they? The Park & Arbourthorne is already closed. :(
DaveH
...catch 22 !! - if theres no pubs in walking distance , then no wonder the supermarkets are doing well with the cheap booze ! So, the pubs shut, 2 of them turn into supermarkets selling off licence canned beer and people get their beer from there, take it home and drink it in front of the telly. How boring! No social contact with other people other than direct family, no community spirit, no jokes and open conversation, no pub communal entertainment ( sing songs / quizes / parties / "turns" / sports events). If you go down to your local every night you get a lot more for your money than a few drinks. It is a community where local people can gather. OK some boozers were a bit rough and frequently had fall outs which ended in fights, violence and disorderly behaviour resulting in police been sent for, - but that was occasional compared to the night after night socialising. Looks like by losing our pubs we have lost a lot more than a place to have a drink. People don't seem to mix and socialise in the same way any more. Walk across the Norfolk Park Estate today and people will not speak or acknowledge you any more, years ago people knew each other from the pubs and so would speak to each other even if they met in the street. Who wants to be Billy No Mates? Up here, its very rare these days to hear laughter in the streets. English does not seem to be the first language locally anymore and nine times out of ten if you happen to say "good morning" to someone you don't know, usually it is returned with a dirty look. Sad is'nt it ! W/E.

We have turned into communities with no soul (I was going to say with no spirit, - but in a boozer that could men something else, - like a pub with no beer )

Who wants to be Billy No Mates? ...yes Dave , well put , and my point exactly ! - no pubs in walking distance on many estates , including the once thriving Community Centres , hence some people have no choice but to stop in with their supermarket cans !!! Oh and a couple of other things which may have had some effect over recent years ... TV with around 60+ channels , instead of the 3 we had as youngsters ! - video , computer games ect. The Internet !!! - with all the social media sites ect , like Facebook , and Forums like this - enough to soon fill a night !!!!
