Sweep.

Process used in CHIMNEY CLEANING

End product was SOOT, a dirty, messy black powder consisting mainly of Carbon.

(Come on skeets, - that seems too simple to me to be the right answer!)

A sweep is a sort of revolving wooden thing which makes a circular pattern in the sand for casting round objects like manhole covers for instance.

Great question Skeets, Thank you for the poser ....

Beyond me !

Stuff used to remove impurities from steel production ? End product ??? Some compound of carbon and pork-pie remnants ?? Slag ? - not you - the end product ...

I realise that it is not the answer you were looking for skeets, - but it's not technically incorrect is it?

Made a nice opening reply to get a bit of interest ;-)
