RichardB
Hair powder tax, what was all that about then ? Any information gratefully received.
Guest tsavo
Whatever it was it wasn't popular! After 1790, both wigs and powder were reserved for older more conservative men, and ladies being presented at court. In 1795, the English government put a tax of hair powder of one guinea per year which effectively caused the demise of both the fashion for wigs and powder by 1800. http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/transl..._powder_tax.htm
Sheffield History
We should all be grateful for that - I would hate to think of how the wigs would look these days had the fad not gone out of fashion

Guest tsavo
Sorry, Richard, if anything I've more than my fair share of hair. My problem is it needs cutting every two weeks. Never tried hair powder though!
