dunsbyowl1867
I take it its gone. Was it called Revolution or Revolver?. I remember I first went in there in 1976 - punk was just starting - they used to write ( in bad handwriting) the names of the singles in stock on paper and pin them to the wall. I remember there just being a few - 10 or so eventually they ran out of wall space. None of this record shop like a supermarket - you had to go and ask at the counter for what you wanted always a danger of embarrassment of pronouncing the bands name incorrectly. Guest daveyboy66
It was called Revolution and the guy who used to run it would come to the nothern soul all nighters at Samantha's and chat with all of us who were collecting records so that he could stock the shop with them. Guest gremista
Remember it well, met the Jam there on the day 'In the City' was released, bought a signed copy, wonder if it is worth anthing now. Hi, everyone, my first post on here...currently exiled in Brazil and getting to that time of life when you start to think about the past... I was pointed here by a reference to Redgates on Owlstalk (Furnival Gate, where I spent many happy hours) and that really got me thinking about the record shops I used to frequent...Bradley's, when I was a kid and then graduating (79,80) to Virgin (Moorfoot?), Violet May's (another thread!) and this one. I remember getting Devo's "Are We Not Men?" from here on my way to do the score box at Shiregreen CC. I must have been 15 or 16 at the time. When I got to the ground my Grandad asked me what I had in the bag and I very proudly showed him... Not sure of what he made of songs entitled "Uncontrollable Urge", "Sloppy (I Think I'm Gettin') and "Jocko Homo"...but he grinned anyway as he probably knew I didn't know what it all meant either! I remember the lists of records written on the wall...and as far I recall they only had a fraction of those! Didn't put me off though...punk ruled... Also, does anybody remember the name of a shop in Crosspool that also sold some of this kind of stuff...I have an "Italian import" copy of New Order's "Power, Corruption and Lies" from this place... OK, that's enough for now... Saude!!
dunsbyowl1867
Great memories gremista not sure I've ever been to Crosspool but your comments did prompt me to recall a record shop in Broomhill - was oit called Record Collector that sold the same stuff. Did you know that? Spent too much time in Record Collector in Broomhill in the early 80s, and ended up with many odd import LPs. It's still there, bigger but just as good, although rummaging through CDs doesn't seem the same as rooting through al those LPs. An interesting feature on the shop can be seen here: http://www.sandmanmagazine.co.uk/oldsite/s...or/recordc.html
Guest gillytom
Hi, My first post on here, me & hubby have just spent hours on this, reminising....., can anyone tell us the name of a pub that was near the Norfolk Arms at the bottom of Dixon Lane, it was on the site that is now a car park, opposite where the Barrow Boys bar/pub was. My husband thinks the pub was demolished in the late 70's. Thanks in advance. Gilly

Gilly ...the "Newmarket" pub was just across from the car park ,and was demolished along with the surounding buildings to make way for "Park Square"roundabout in the late 60's ,the roundabout being finished around 73-
Simon Greenwood
The shop still seems to be there, but didn't it become a specialist shop dedicated to Prince later on? It's still called Revolution, which would of course still be relevant. However, I've also heard that there is/was a Prince shop in Ilkley of all places, and I'm sure there's not room for two in the same county! simon.r
Revolution was indeed the best place in Sheffield for Punk and New Wave in the late 70s. I still have a fabulous sliver card display for the second Talking Heads album which they saved for me, and a multi coloured vinyl Stranglers 7" US import EP I bought there. Does anyone know when this shop opened or finally closed? This side of the gallery is now sealed off as the Council get ready to trash the whole Market building. Still there is Their Price records on the market ground floor, which by my reckoning must now be Sheffield's oldest still open record shop. I used to buy singles there too in the 70s and 80s, but these days it's just a few budget CDs. Simon
simon.r
I don't suppose you remember the name of the band? Only I'm researching Sheffield Record Shops and it would be good to add this in. Impulse was a great store - went back into sort of huts beyond the front room and the clothing dept, which was full of loads of used vinyl and even a smattering of Bootlegs.
