Bayleaf
How much steel is now produced in the Sheffield/Rotherham area. How does this compare with previous years? I can't give any figures off the top, but I remember reading that as much steel was produced now as before the collapse of the industry, but by a fraction of the workforce. I'll se if I can find the article. I may be gone some time.....
vox
I've heard that as well Bayleaf. Also that what is made now are more specialist steels. Can't help with where I heard it though.
DaveH
I've heard that as well Bayleaf. Also that what is made now are more specialist steels. Can't help with where I heard it though. Well judging by what the Government tell us about steel production and its bright future and comparing that to the reality of what has just happened at forgemasters and to steel production not only in Sheffield but elsewhere in Britain, particularly the northeast, you could have heard it here, - The Government department for misinformation The Ministry of lies and deceit. The malicious gossip and rumours working group The Propaganda workshop Now what was that book by George Orwell that sounds a bit dated, 1984 or something??? Any info would be appreciated. http://www.facebook....gid=25750519904 Hi Jim, they are WW2 ARP protective headger, also known as 'Battle bowlers' (according to the first edition of The Star - Sheffield at War) Edit: the photo was taken in the English Steel Corporation's River Don Works. This explanation seems to make more sence .. Were these for real?
DaveH
Hi Jim, they are WW2 ARP protective headger, also known as 'Battle bowlers' Edit: the photo was taken in the English Steel Corporation's River Don Works They must be immensely heavy and uncomfortable to wear. It looks as though they have extra support at the shoulders and waist to prevent putting weight on the head and neck. Even so, it must be an encumberance to have to carry all that metal around on your head.

DaveH
Still learning, I hope this works Steel Production Works fine now THYLACINE. "Makes a greater tonnage of steel than ever before, but in a fraction of the space" (and a fraction of the workforce) As you say, no quantities, numbers or statistics are given. Is this because it is a piece of propaganda and wouldn't stand up to proof by actual real verified numbers perhaps?
