Stuart0742
Is it the "Dog & Gate"? Not my answer, not saying it is wrong though, a sort of cryptic answer
DaveH
Is it the "Dog & Gate"? Nice one Dunsbyowl Dog and Gate, As in Stuarts earlier avitar showing him at the gate of the Rodley Inn being threatened by their own guard dog. However, I don't think the Rodley Inn (a.k.a "The Dog & Gate) was ever a Wards pub.

Stuart0742
Its over on the side - today's top posters but not on your posts - is it Bertie Bassett? Right lets make it a little simpler. I did not get the "Dog & Gate" at 1st nice one Dunsby My new Avatar is taken from a larger photo and is part of a building?
DaveH
Its over on the side - today's top posters but not on your posts - is it Bertie Bassett? No that ones not Bertie Bassett, aparently its some Swiss chef called "Mr. Bagell" It's at the side because Stuart has set "Mr. Bagell" as his PROFILE PICTURE which appears against his user name and on his profile page. His AVITAR is different and this appears at the side (left) of all his posts. This has changed from his "Dog & Gate" avitar to the "Wards Beer" one earlier today. His previous PROFILE PICTURE was a picture of him on his wedding day. When Stuart changed his profile picture to Mr Bagell I changed mine from a picture of me as a long haired university student to a picture of Alfred E Neumann that graces the cover of almost every issue of "MAD" magazine. My current Avitar is Vulcan on top of the town hall carrying a heavenly object across the sky. I suppose I will have to change it now!

DaveH
Heres a bigger version I don't think making the image bigger actually gives us any extra clues does it? Looks like your "Quickie Quiz" could be longer than you thought it would be.

DaveH
I know it does not help much, but at least you should get the idea what sort of thing it is Cleverly revealing just a bit more around the edge of the picture it clearly shows that it's a sign on a wall. I think we had already guessed that much. It's not the old brewery on Ecclesall Road is it? Although you did say it was a pub! Is it a pub near the old brewery? DaveH
No Quite a well known pub, I'm stuck on this one now. I'll leave it and have a think to give someone else a chance to come up with the answer. Quickie Quiz OK, so have you solved my 2 week old "mystery clock" one yet! :P

DaveH
Not sure if any other Wards Pubs had a similar sign, So there could be more than one correct answer then ! What if most (or all) Wards pubs had a similar sign?
DaveH
It looks like you are correct Steve That solves it then, It's that well known Wards pub called "the THE" Wonder where that is. When I was at university in Hull there was a pub in Beverley (I think it sold Hull Brewery Ales at the time) which was called, by the locals "the push". It got this name because the small pub had no name or sign outside it at all, it just looked like another house but on the door just above the handle was a small metal plate which said "PUSH" (as in, push to open), so everyone knew it as "the PUSH" Never did find out what its real name was. Not being a beer drinker I thought it was all the same but I've just read Richards little book and discovered the difference. Richard not included on this one. ukelele lady
This is a quote from Roy Davey's book Ale was the drink made from scalded malted grain, without the addition of any flavouring. Beer is made by adding hops to the wort produced from the scalded grain, and boiling them together to impart the distinctive flavour which hops give to beer. A treatment that also improved it's keeping qualities. Cheers , I think I'll stick to the wine.
