RichardB
In a sl worn limp back leather notebook : A unique and interesting item, this is an 1870 manuscript valuation of some coal pits around the Sheffield area, carried out by G B Forster of Backworth, Newcastle on Tyne. On 28 single sided pages, and addressed to Benjamin Huntsman Esq, he says that: In compliance with your request, I have made an examination of your Sheffield Tinsley Collieries and have obtained the necessary information as to the costs of working and sale price to enable me to report on and value the same. The collieries are Sheffield, Tinsley, West Retford. The rest of the lined exercise book is blank. This is a highly detailed valuation by a skilled hand and mind - there ius considerable local detail supporting his calculations, regarding colliery railways and the like, local markets etc. A valuable local history item and also for anyone interested in the history of coal mines.
